Why Is Your Computer Overheating? (And What to Do About It)

If your computer is running louder than usual, feels hot to the touch, slows down during normal tasks, or shuts off without warning, it's probably overheating. It's one of the most common issues we see at Husky Bros IT Services here in Colorado Springs, and the good news is it's almost always fixable.

Here's what's usually going on and what you can do about it.

The Two Most Common Causes

Dust buildup

Over time, dust accumulates inside your computer and coats the fans, heatsinks, and vents. When that happens, airflow drops and your components can't cool down properly. This is especially common in Colorado Springs where dry, dusty conditions accelerate the buildup. Most machines benefit from a cleaning every 12–18 months — more often if you have pets or a dusty environment.

Dried-out thermal paste

Thermal paste is the compound that sits between your CPU (and sometimes GPU) and its heatsink. It's responsible for transferring heat away from the processor. Over time — usually after 2–4 years — it dries out and loses effectiveness. When that happens, temperatures spike even under light workloads. A fresh application of thermal paste can drop CPU temps by 10–20 degrees.

Other Causes Worth Knowing

  • Blocked vents — If your laptop is sitting on a bed, couch, or carpet, the vents on the bottom are likely blocked. Always use a hard, flat surface.
  • High ambient temperature — Running your computer in a warm room or direct sunlight makes the cooling system work harder. Warmer Colorado Springs summers can make this worse.
  • Overclocking — If you've pushed your CPU or GPU beyond factory settings, the extra heat load can overwhelm your cooling setup.
  • Failing fans — If a fan has stopped spinning or is running erratically, cooling drops significantly, even if everything else is fine.

Signs Your Computer Is Overheating

  • Fan is noticeably louder or running constantly
  • Computer feels hot to the touch
  • Performance drops during tasks that used to run fine
  • Random shutdowns or restarts — especially under load
  • High CPU/GPU temps visible in task manager or monitoring software
  • It's been 2+ years since the last cleaning

What You Should Do

If you're comfortable opening up your machine, you can use a can of compressed air to blow out the dust — but be careful not to spin the fans with the airflow, and don't touch the components. For thermal paste replacement, that's generally a job for a technician since it involves removing the heatsink and working directly on the processor.

If you'd rather just have it handled properly, that's exactly what we do. At Husky Bros IT Services in Colorado Springs, we open up the machine, do a thorough cleaning, replace the thermal paste, and run stress tests afterward to confirm everything is running at safe temperatures before we hand it back.

Don't Ignore It

Overheating isn't just a performance problem — it causes long-term damage. Prolonged high temperatures degrade your CPU, GPU, and other components over time and can eventually cause permanent hardware failure. A cleaning today is a lot cheaper than replacing a motherboard or processor down the road.
